Rally for Ream Nelson!

My name is Summer. One of the greatest privileges of my life has been to have Ream Nelson (Alameel) as a big sister. For those of you who are lucky enough to know her, you know of her kindness, strength, sense of humor and love for others. Ream is a mother to 7 AMAZING children (Yes, 7). Her favorite job of all time, minus being the BEST mom, is coaching her Volleyball girls. Her home is always open to anyone in need, even if that need is just for a bit of fun!

She has built a God-centered life with her soulmate, Dakota Nelson, who is a part-time seminary and Sunday school teacher in his church. With her joyful spirit and his deep dedication to his family, they are truly a match made in Heaven. Unfortunately, things are not well with this sweet family. Right now, the Nelson family needs all the support we can give.

On Wednesday, July 11, 2018, tragedy struck. 38-year-old Ream suffered a major and completely unexpected heart attack. She and Dakota had been working (but mostly playing) together in their garage when Dakota went outside to put some tools away. Dakota returned within five minutes to find Ream lying on the floor blue and not breathing. He immediately began CPR, calling to the eleven-year old to call 911. Help came immediately, and Ream was transported unconscious to a hospital in Idaho Falls. Her brain was without oxygen for more than 20 minutes causing a massive bleed that the doctors cannot explain and severe brain damage. Ream is stable and is in a coma-- which is allowing her brain the rest it so desperately needs. The medical staff are doing all they can for Ream, but at best, the future looks very difficult for this family.

Dakota says, “It is hard to accurately describe in words what it is like to have found my beautiful wife, whom I have fallen in love with and grown closer to in our 17 years of marriage on the floor, eyes open and unresponsive with our three-year-old standing over her. Having our children witness this is unthinkable.”

The road to recovery is uncertain. The doctors seem optimistic about her survival due to her youth and the fact that she has so much to fight for in her life. They anticipate that the coma will last for 3-6 months. During that time, Ream will be transferred to a long-term care facility where she can receive the intensive care she needs. Her doctors remain hopeful that within 1-2 years of inpatient treatment she may see significant improvement but offer no guarantees for a full recovery. Right now, there are no promises.

Adding to the emotional and financial stress on the family, Ream is uninsured due to the health care crisis in Idaho.  Like many Idahoans, Dakota works 3 jobs to provide for his family. The children have insurance, but Ream and Dakota do not. Currently, an estimated 62,000 Idahoans fall into the “Medicaid gap,” meaning that though they work hard to support their families, they earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to afford insurance on the state health care exchange. (https://www.reclaimidaho.org/) Though this issue is set to be on the ballot in November, the help comes too late for Ream and her family.

This is where you come in. Please be a blessing to this family that has blessed so many others. With a house full of children and a long road ahead, the Nelson family needs immediate support. Please consider a gift to help provide care and support for Ream so she can come home to her children- they need her.
