Hi everyone!
At around 7:30am on December 19th I woke up to feed our cats as usual however, only one cat ran to me in excitement for breakfast. Confused, I went to search for Bean and found her in the litter box. I stayed to wait until she was done but she spent around 10 minutes in the litter box which is very unusual for cats and very concerning. My partner and I decided to call around and see if we could find a vet that would take us on such short notice. We recently moved out of province and have not found a regular vet yet. We finally got through to a vet that would take us as an emergency patient and we rushed to the vet so that Bean could be seen.
About 10 minutes into our appointment we were informed that Bean's bladder was swollen and full and we also found out that, after almost 5 years of calling Bean our "daughter", she is actually a he! The vet told us that Bean is, and always has been, male.
Following this surprising news, the vet tried to expel Bean's bladder but was unsuccessful. The vet then decided the best course of action would be to run blood and urine tests as well as X-Rays. After these tests they then put in a catheter to flush the blockage and told us they would need to transfer him to another vet to stay for observation for the weekend.
The initial vet cost was $1,689.90 CAD which we had to scrape together from multiple lines of credit. After transferring him to the second veterinary hospital, they quoted us around $4,500.00 CAD if all goes well with the recovery and removal of the catheter.
My partner and I just moved to Newfoundland so that she could pursue her masters degree. We drove from Ontario with our two cats, both completely self-funded. Since we are still trying to get established here, we don't have an emergency fund to fall back on. We were not prepared for surprise medical bills, especially those that are this high.
We are asking for love and support in any way possible to help Bean come home healthy and better than ever. Anything is greatly appreciated.
Love,
Brooklyn, Satya, Bean and Fig.
