Support Logan's Fight Against Leukemia
Donation protected
I am Robert Cooney and I am starting a GoFundMe for my grandson Logan and his family. Logan is a childhood cancer survivor. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with a recurrence in October of 2024. Following is a message that I have shared yesterday with friends and family to give them an update on Logan's condition and situation.
Some of you are aware that my grandson Logan has had a recurrence of Childhood Leukemia and has been undergoing treatment since November 1st, including chemotherapy, both at Golisano in Syracuse and with a mobile pump, which has allowed him to be able to be at home, attend school, spend time with friends, and be somewhat "normal". Throughout this time, Logan has been his usual cheery self – never a moment of frustration, self-pity, or discouragement. His determination and perseverance are simply inspiring.
In December the decision was made that the best hope of long term success in his circumstance was to undergo a bone marrow transplant which would need to take place at Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester, NY. This would involve finding a donor, arranging a time when both Logan and the donor could be at Golisano together, and making arrangements for what is a 6 week course of treatments and post-transplant monitoring. Logan will need to be at Golisano for 3-4 weeks and then will have to stay in Rochester for another 2 weeks, as the doctors want him to be close by in the event that there are any complications and to ensure the success of the transplant.
After searching for a donor and doing some testing, it was found that Logan's sister Olivia, age 6, would be the best match for Logan. Olivia has been quite enthusiastic about this decision and has even expressed her recognition of the importance of this - "I can help save Logan". Being a donor will involve a procedure in which healthy cells will be collected form Olivia’s hipbone, which will also take place at Golisano in Rochester on the morning of the transplant.
As of today, Logan is at Rochester, as prior to the transplant, scheduled for Monday, 2/24, there is a 4 day series of radiation treatments, which he has now begun, to kill his diseased white blood cells and condition his body for the donor cells. A side effect of this radiation treatment is that Logan will not be able to have children of his own.
This situation has put tremendous strain on all of Logan's immediate family. His mother and father will be alternating weeks in Rochester and at home so Logan will never be without a parent, and likewise with Olivia. Balancing the myriad challenges this all involves while trying to maintain a work life, a home life, and a sense of positivity would be a challenge to any and all of us.
Raising children is complicated and difficult enough, without the added burden of such an upsetting and traumatic threat to health and wellbeing. A cancer diagnosis is heartbreaking for all of those closely involved. Considering that this is this family’s second time having to endure this is, it is even more so.
I am considering starting a GoFundMe for Logan’s family as there will be unknown and unexpected expenditures throughout this process.
Thanks for your attention.
