John's Fight

Donation protected
We're really not sure where to start with this, and we're not a family that's used to asking for assistance with personal matters. Our father, hero, provider, protector and military veteran, John Sassau, was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer. Everyone who knows our Dad can attest that he's the type of man that never complains. He’s a "Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps" type of man, which possibly led to the late discovery of his condition.

Initially, he went into the ER with symptoms of pain swallowing, dizziness, weakness, and rapid weigh loss. After being cleared, he was sent home with meds and returned to work quickly. Because his symptoms refused to subside, he had no other option but to return to the hospital. During this encounter, doctors believed his symptoms were consistent with a throat infection. After being admitted for treatment, related to the throat infection, we were relieved and thought he was going to quickly recover and return home. Doctors decided to order more extensive testing, while our Dad was admitted, and after a week, he was diagnosed with Colon Cancer that metastasized to his liver and lymph nodes.
Our Dad has given us life. He’s been our nurturer during all of life’s woes, and he’s cultivated us into the men and women we are today. We want to do whatever we can to take care of him. He has two children who are First Responders and one son that is an Active Duty Service Member in the USAF and a daughter that’s a teachers aide the list goes on.The children he raised are products of his hard work. Like our Dad, his children chose honorable careers, which come with many sacrifices, ironically similar to those we’ve been making since his diagnosis.

Even with health insurance, we’ve been bombarded with medical bills. These bills are beginning to strain our family financially. Even though it’s not in his character to ask for help, we can see that he’s worried. One daughter, who has a wedding date set for 2019, has depleted her wedding funds by taking care of some medical bills, and she knows how excited her Dad is to walk her down the aisle.
The family has resorted to paying for medical bills with credit cards, while simultaneously taking care of their families.

Our Dad is currently being treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Our families reside in Lafayette, LA, and we’ve been commuting to and from Houston, TX to accompany him during appointments, treatments and for visits to ensure that he remains in good spirits. We are asking for donations to help fund current and future care and treatment costs. Any assistance to aid in easing the financial strain on our family will help us tremendously. Our father is a strong man, and he’s a fighter. We know that he’s fighting as hard as he can. After receiving a round of chemotherapy, when we asked how he felt, and his response was, "like a true champion”. He’s a great man, and we need your help to keep him in the fight.

Our prayer is that God puts it in your heart to help our family, and most importantly, our Dad. We will greatly appreciate any donation, no matter the amount. If you have information regarding any financial assistance resources for Cancer patients, we would appreciate that information as well. Our family is beyond grateful for those that are able to assist us during this trying time. God bless you
