Support Dr. Mahmud Hasan’s Fight for Relief & Recovery

I am making an urgent plea to you for support for my dear friend Dr. Mahmud (Matt) Hasan, who has been suffering from a debilitating medical condition that has now reached a critical point where he must have immediate lifesaving surgeries within the next few weeks.

Dr. Hasan's health issues began with what was intended to be a minor left inguinal hernia repair in January 2020. Following the surgery, he experienced complications initially misdiagnosed as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This misdiagnosis led to an inappropriate laser treatment of the prostate. Unfortunately, the laser's intensity setting was too high, causing severe, irreparable damage to the nerves and tissue surrounding his bladder neck, which affected his pelvic floor muscles which subsequently prevented normal bowel movement. To address this, a bypass colostomy was created to allow waste to exit, but this led to additional complications, including a parastomal hernia. He has been mostly bedridden and homebound for the past eight months. While his mind remains sharp, his physical health has steadily declined.

Dr. Hasan has consulted with leading specialists at institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard and NYU Langone, none has been able to provide the focused, coordinated inpatient care required.

Specialists at a clinic in Munich, Germany believe they can perform a series of radical surgeries and pelvic floor reconstruction which will allow him to regain the ability to perform essential bodily functions. These surgeries must be performed within the next few weeks before one or more of his life-sustaining organs stop functioning. However, the estimated total cost including medical expenses, transport, lodging etc., is more than $100,000 (not covered by Medicare or his private insurance as it is in a foreign country) – an impossible sum for Dr. Hasan after five years of high out-of-pocket medical bills and inability to work at full capacity.

He refuses to give up hope, but he needs our help. A contribution of any size can make a difference in covering the expenses. More importantly, it will boost his morale by showing him that he is not alone in this fight.

Both Tarin and Dr. Hasan attended Mirzapur Cadet College, Bangladesh for their secondary school education.

Dr. Hasan was a topper - standing first in the Secondary School Certificate examination of Dhaka Board, Bangladesh in 1969. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in economics from Brown University.
