Luis Angelo Perez’s Pursuit of Inclusion

My name is Angelina Sandoval, mother of Luis Perez. My child has been a student of the Vacaville School District since 2009. He is diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and is a student that currently attends Vacaville High School in the Solano County Program.
I have started this effort to raise money to cover the cost of redistribution of a NEW Senior Student Body T-shirts. Recently, we were informed that my child, in addition to a classmate, were omitted from the class names placed on the back of the Senior T-shirts. For any Senior, it is an honor to be acknowledged on this upper classman shirt and to find out that your child (in addition to others) were not included, is disheartening. We have found many cracks in our current education systems in how students with Special Needs are segregated from the regular student body and this error definitely highlights this point. Since the senior shirts have already been generated and are currently being sold on campus, there will be no efforts from the school to correct those shirts. It is our hope and goal to raise funds that will cover the cost of these new shirts and provide ALL students (Senior Class, Special Education, SCOE County, and late/military students) with a full inclusive list of the 2021 Graduating Seniors.
I have received correspondence from multiple entities (Vacaville High School, Vacaville Unified School District, and Solano County Office of Education) and unfortunately not everyone has the same perspective when it comes to identifying who is the responsible party to ensure special need students are included.
This is a culmination of many instances were I have witnessed the education system falling short. This is not just about a t-shirt. This is a wrong that cannot be made right at this point. By producing another senior shirt, students will be able to stand and support Inclusion and Solidarity.
All excess funds will be utilized to accommodate a Senior Trip that is feasible and is within the limitations and keeps in mind of accommodations that will allow them to have a memorable senior experience.
I would like to Acknowledge and Thank ALL Administrators, Educators, and Staff over the years who have fought for our students. However, the system is not built on one individual, it will take all of us working in the same direction to be successful.
I plan to strive to work towards a more efficient system that will ultimately include ALL students. #weareALLinthistogether
