Rajmonda Krasniqi Spring Semester

Update 12/10/2015
Rajmonda has passed all of her classes and is preparing for the new semester. Thank you again for making it possible for Rajmonda to continue her education.
$4000 is needed to help cover this semester of room and board. The payment is due December 16th, 2015.

Rajmonda Krasniqi’s story is one of a thousand miracles brought together by the kindness of strangers.  I first heard about her story from a young woman from Kosovo who saw her trying to communicate with her mother in Pristine.  She told her mother, “I know someone who might be able to help you.”  Thus began my communication with Rajmonda’s mother who was desperate to find help for her deaf child.

Rajmonda and her mother arrived in Dallas in 2002 on a medical visa made possible by Dr. Bob Peters.  On our first visit, he fitted her with digital hearing aids that could only give her very limited hearing.  She was eligible, he told us, for a cochlear implant.

Her first year was spent learning sign language in school.  At the age of twelve she received a cochlear implant and began speech therapy.  The most optimistic of people who work in this field doubted that Rajmonda could ever overcome all the obstacles to getting into college.

After high school, she returned to Kosovo for almost two years.  She was able to return as an F-1 student, literally by the help of Congress.  Many times Rajmonda thought there was no way she could ever get past all the obstacles caused by her handicap.

But she has.  She graduated this spring with an Associates Degree from Richland College.  In anticipation of her graduation, her speech therapist and I took Rajmonda to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.  They have a very impressive Deaf Education Department.  She has been accepted and will begin classes in August.

Rajmonda’s tuition for the two years it will take to get her Bachelors degree is covered by DARS.  However, she is not eligible for any scholarship money for her room and board.  That cost will be $4,000 a semester and there will be four semesters.  $4,000 will be due in August, $4,000 in January and the same for the next year.

Thank you for any help you can give to help Rajmonda.   She is very deserving and is so excited about her future.

                                                                        Thank you,
