Angela Conrad, my wife of 28 years and mother of our two beautiful children Emilia and Massimo, passed away on March 27, 2019 after an 8 year battle with cancer. Angela was a scholar and her passing left an enormous void in our life, in the lives of all that loved her and of her beloved students she worked with and helped achieve their goals during her intense teaching career of 20 years.
We met in Italy in the early 1990's during her brief stint in the fashion business. When she moved back to the United States I followed within one year and eventually we married. During all these years we always wondered at the odds of meeting each other, she was my soul mate.
Angela's College job provided a stability that permitted us to make a living making and teaching Art and Literature, not a small feat. When Angela passed, the family income was abruptly cut in half and immediately we joined the millions of Americans without health insurance.
I am now paying in the COBRA program but I will not be able to sustain the high monthly fee for more than two or three months.
I am a published author but in academia this does not guarantee me a full time job with benefits.
During the last year I reduced my teaching schedule to stay close to Angela and take her to weekly trips to the hospital for chemotherapy and stay with her as much time as I could.
I am now struggling with steady, relentless monthly bills: mortgage, healthcare, credit cards and my income stream is not as strong as the outgoing flow of cash.
Emilia, my beautiful daughter, will start college next fall and Massimo, my sweet boy, will go two years from now.
I am actively reconnecting with the colleges I collaborate with to get more courses, I have also increased my workshops activity. In addition to this I am working on my second book on Figure Anatomy and I am developing online courses for various venues.
It is a very sad and confused moment in my life and in the life of my children, I am working at all possible solutions to resolve this terrible and cruel emergency but I realize that it is a formidable opponent.
When Angela's situation suddenly worsened this past month, people came together: family, friends, students and acquaintances came to visit, some flying in from great distance and some stayed with us for days, helping cleaning the house, cooking food or staying with Angela when I was at work. It was beautiful and reassuring and uplifting to see how nice people can be, it also showed how much Angela was and is loved. It helped us go through this moment and it still does.
The donations will be used to ensure that we as a family can make it through this emergency, setting aside some money for Emilia and Massimo's college tuition, help pay for the COBRA and alleviate the credit cards bills that accumulated during the last few years.
I want to thank all that will contribute to this fund and also those that already helped us with kind, heartfelt words and moral support, it was a wonderful thing to see.
Thank you,
Roberto, Emilia, Massimo and Angela
