Let's help Carl make a difference in this world!

Carl Wassilie is from the Yup’ik Nation in Western Alaska. He grew up in Seward and spent his summers at a traditional fish camp in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, where he witnessed the huge returns of spawning salmon and experienced the rich salmon culture central to his people.

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill also informed his life. He was 13 when the spill – at the time, the largest man-made industrial disaster in the world – took place. He remembers hearing Exxon’s promises – that the corporation would fully take care of the mess it had created. “That shaped my life – the continuous lies of one of the biggest corporations on the planet,” he said.

As an adult, Carl has given his life over to addressing such harms. After earning a degree in biology, he joined activists throughout the region, fighting against oil pipelines, salmon farming in Alaska, GMOs in our food, the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, and more. He’s also worked to protect indigenous communities, biodiversity in the Arctic, and ecosystem health.

Today, Carl continues this work, though he is struggling with a painful, physical disability that limits his ability to do paid work. He has also struggled to access unemployment and other cash benefits. Friends are working to support him in his effort to access benefits, but until we’re successful, he needs immediate financial help.

Get to know Carl through the videos below, as he speaks his truth about food sovereignty for Indigenous Peoples and the impacts of Big Oil on our human and natural worlds.
