Yves Sakila was a man who lived, worked and was part of the fabric of Irish life. He was known to those around him as a warm, dignified and gentle person — a human being with a story, a family who loved him, and a community who valued him.

Yves died in circumstances that remain the subject of active investigation. He passed away following an incident at Arnott’s department store in Dublin that some media outlets have described as being Ireland’s ‘George Floyd moment.’

In the wake of his death, Yves has been subjected to a deeply troubling and unjust narrative online. Racist rhetoric has sought to characterise him in a negative light, to reduce him to a caricature, and to deflect from the serious questions that must be asked about how he was

treated in his final moments.

Yves has been denied dignity in death in so many ways and his loved ones have been denied the opportunity to mourn. Please donate to help repatriate Yves’ body to the Democratic Republic of Congo so that he may finally be laid to rest and so his loved ones can begin to heal. Any excess funds will go to the Justice for Yves Sakila campaign which aims to make sure there is a fair investigation into the circumstances of Yves’ death.
