Male Non-hormonal Contraception: Working Together to Address Global Health & Environmental Outcomes -- Because It’s About Time Studies show that more than 40% of pregnancies worldwide are unintended. That translates to more than 85 Million unintended pregnancies each year. We at the Male Contraceptive Initiative (MCI) believe that addressing the rate of unintended pregnancies is a critical factor in impacting social and environmental outcomes including poverty, maternal and child health, education, and population growth. As the World Health Organization states, “Family planning is key to slowing unsustainable population growth and the resulting negative impacts on the economy, environment, and national and regional development efforts”. While many women are still challenged by unmet need for contraception due to various issues with existing methods, we continue to overlook the fact that men, who constitute nearly half of the population, lack access to adequate options to take an active role in contributing to family planning. It takes two. If we can increase the number of contraceptive options available to men, we can make a difference. With an estimated global population growth rate of 83 million people per year, it is easy to do the math to see how increasing contraceptive options for men with the goal of addressing unintended pregnancies will have a real impact on our world. We Need Your Help We have been presented with a matching challenge from one of our donors: if we raise $500,000, our donor will match it! But we have to do so by the end of 2019! This would result in an additional $1 million dollars that will allow us to significantly increase our investments in 2019 with the goal of accelerating the timeline to get new male methods of reversible, non-hormonal contraception to market. About MCI Male Contraceptive Initiative is a small, nonprofit founded in 2014 and based in Durham, NC. We are a global hub for researchers, philanthropists, and advocates and one of the leading funding agencies supporting the advancement of novel safe, non‑hormonal, reversible male contraceptives. We advocate for a world where empowered couples choose a contraceptive method that works best for their family planning needs. Every day we hear from people in person or online expressing interest in male contraception and looking to learn more: from women seeking alternatives to the methods available to them, to men eager to take a greater role in managing their reproductive health, and couples hoping to share responsibility in their family planning needs. Over the past 3 years, we have committed over $2 million in funding to support non-hormonal, reversible male contraceptive research and development. We fully understand the importance of efficiency, which is why we are proud to say that last year approximately 90% of our donations went directly to supporting programs focused on male contraceptive R&D. That’s 90-cents of every dollar we receive! We have an opportunity to increase our research support by an additional $1 million this year, but we need your help!
