After an intense 9 hours of open heart surgery on June 9,  Kai is suffering from  rare and serious complications including a bacterial infection, inflammation, and irregular heart rhythms. Kai has intense pain and nausea, and he's back in the Intensive Care Unit. He developed an unusual pericardial effusion (buildup of extra fluid in the space around the heart). This dangerous excess fluid was putting pressure on his heart and preventing  normal pumping. He had another surgery to drain it, where they discovered the infection is in the pericardial sac around his heart. The infection and rapid heart rhythms injured his kidneys.

The heart failure team is consulting with electrical physiologists, infectious disease experts, and kidney specialists to get Kai stable and decide the next steps, as they've never seen this combination of side effects and contra-indications before. The hospital is in Colorado, far from their home in New Mexico, which has created increased  expenses and hardships.
