Hi, my name is Jay Kozar, and I’m a long-time friend of Marcus Johnson and his incredible family. I live outside of Cleveland, Ohio, but despite the distance, we have always stayed in touch — he is more than a friend, he is a leader who I have tried to emulate from afar.

When I heard about the devastating Altadena fires and how they’ve upended Marcus’s life, I knew I had to do something to help. Marcus has always been a selfless and generous person, opening his heart and home to those in need, and now it’s our turn to give back.

Marcus's Story

The recent Altadena fires have forever changed the lives of the Johnson family. Marcus Johnson, a long-time resident of Altadena, has seen unimaginable loss as flames swept through the community.

Marcus’s childhood home—his mother’s home—was completely destroyed, taking with it over 50 years of cherished memories, holidays, and family gatherings. His stepmom’s home also burned down, as did a second property Marcus owned. Many of his friends and extended family have lost their homes as well.

While Marcus’s primary residence was spared, it has now become a refuge for his loved ones. He has opened his doors to his mother, sister, stepmom, and his in-laws, providing them with a roof over their heads while grappling with the emotional and logistical challenges of starting over.

The Johnson family’s immediate needs are overwhelming. Marcus is working tirelessly to provide for everyone under his roof, but the family urgently requires financial support to cover:

“It’s hard to put 50 years of memories into words. Everything I grew up with is gone. But I have my mother and sister, and we are healthy. That’s what’s most important. Our lives have been turned upside down, but we’re optimistic and grateful for the love of our family, friends, and community.”
