Yuny Barrera, Mother of Four Passed Away Suddenly

Donation protected
Every day is a gift.
The world lost a beautiful soul on December 12, 2023. On that day, Yuny Barrera, wife and beloved mother of Ashley, Abraham, Isabella and Valentina, collapsed and passed away very suddenly from a brain aneurysm. She was 39.

The Barreras have been a part of the Evanston/Skokie community for 15 years touching multiple organizations, schools, and programs -- Yuny’s warmth, generosity and kindness has been felt throughout our community and will be missed tremendously. Yuny is the mother to four wonderful children – Ashley, 19, a sophomore and first-generation college student at the University of Wisconsin; Abraham, 15, a sophomore at Niles North; Isabella, 8, a third grader at Highland Elementary; and Valentina, 5, a preschooler at Covenant Nursery School and Childcare Network of Evanston’s Home Visiting program.

Yuny was also the devoted wife of 20 years to Abraham, her childhood sweetheart.
Yuny and Abraham met in Mexico when Yuny was 14 and Abraham 16. Abraham shares that since meeting at that age, they never separated. Destiny. The newlywed couple immigrated to the United States in 2002 to join other family and were living the American dream with Abraham and Yuny starting up a small landscape company and the two raising their four children in the diverse suburb of Skokie.

Even upon her death, Yuny’s caring and giving nature continued. As an organ donor through the Gift of Hope, Yuny helped save the lives of more than 6 people as her heart, lungs, kidneys, and liver all had matches and helped save the life of someone in need. Always giving.

With no health insurance or life insurance, the family is facing unforeseen expenses. Without a mother to bake, cook special meals, pick up from preschool, drive carpool, start family dance parties, a void has entered this family. It is now time for our community to support and enfold the Barrera family, ensuring the whole family continues to thrive. Abraham and the Barrera family are understandably in an immense amount of grief at Yuny’s sudden loss. Your contribution to this fund will help to defray the impact of costly medical bills, stabilize a family experiencing an unimaginable crisis, enable Dad to spend some time away from work nurturing and caring for his young family, and ensure a bright future for all the kids.

Please hug your loved ones tight tonight and keep the Barrera family in your thoughts and
prayers. If you are able to help please consider donating so we can keep this family wrapped in love.

“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”
