Karma's Story
Karma is a 4 year old Border Collie/Whippet mix that plays flyball for Stampede Flyball Racing Team out of St. George, UT. Before her injury, she was one of the fasted dogs playing flyball, running consistent 3.5's in a line-up. On October 25, 2014, as we were practicing for the 20th Annual Jumps N Jackpots hosted by Touch N Go, Karma came off the flyball box screaming in pain and holding up her left leg.
Immediately, we rushed her to the emergency room for x-rays. It was confirmed, Karma had broken both the radius and ulna in her left leg. The following day, we took her Las Vegas Veterinary Specialty Center for a consultation to have the break repaired. On October 29, 2014, she underwent surgery to have a bone plate put in. For the following 8 weeks, we made several visits to the vet to have the bandage changed. On December 29, the bandage was removed and x-rays were done to see how the healing had progressed. Her radius had healed beautifully, but her ulna still had not grown back together. The vet, however, gave his consent to finally start her rehab.
Karma's rehab for the past 6 months consisted of many different exercise that included the peanut ball, ladder work and many sessions of Hydro-treadmill. While she was undergoing her rehab, we were tracking the growth of her ulna with x-rays. It's a slow healing process, but it looks like the ulna has finally reconnected.
We had thought the rehab had been going well, and the ulna was reconnected. We felt it was time to run Karma at practice to see how she handled the stress of runs on grass and mats. After a few runs, it was evident that she was having problems and we need to find out why.
On June 22, 2015, I made a trip to San Diego to see a surgery/rehab specialist by the name of Dr. Dennis Aron with Fido's Surgery. He examined Karma and determined that there is much loss of range of motion and a slight loss of flexion of the elbow. He said the bone plate would need to be removed and that she would have to undergo extensive rehab to "potentially" get back to running condition.
The final decision was made. The bone plate had to go. The surgery is scheduled for July 8, then after which Karma will make her way to San Diego for 8-16 weeks to begin her rehab journey which could last up to 1 year.
Normally I wouldn't ask for help, however, the cost up- to-date for the 2 surgeries and all the rehab has amounted to just over $10,000. This has caused a financial burden .
Thank you for taking the time to read Karma's story and appreciate any help that you can give.
