Caring for Carey

Donation protected
In 2019, at 39 years old, with a 18 month old child and new family, Carey Johnson was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer.  She had been having symptoms for almost a year but everyone she saw chalked it up to childbirth or hormones.  Little did she know, she was yet another victim of a disease that is showing up more and more in young people.  She woke up from an emergency colonoscopy in September 2019 and her whole world changed.

Since then, she has been fighting a relentless battle with courage, strength and grace. She’s been through months of chemotherapy, radiation and 3 major surgeries all while working full time, being a mother to Sebastian and partner to Marc.  Then Covid-19 hit, making everything a bit more complicated.  Most of Carey and Marc’s family lives out of state and the pandemic has made getting the support from family and friends difficult.  Along with this second wave of Covid in NY, Carey has had a reoccurrence and is undergoing a new chemotherapy.  This regimen has been much more difficult than the last, which wears on her, Marc and most importantly, their almost three year old son, Sebastian.

Carey is still working when she can, although not in the full time role she had before.  Marc has had to restrict himself to working from home and Sebastian is now home from daycare full time to limit exposure to Covid.  There are still no visitors allowed at the hospital where Carey goes at least three times a week for treatment.  All of this is exhausting and heartbreaking, as the most important thing for Carey is to watch her son grow up.  With all of these other commitments she is taken away from that daily.

We are raising funds for Carey’s family to pay for the extra help they need ay home while she is in treatment.  The funds will help Carey and Marc pay for consistent in-home cleaning services and care for Sebastian when needed.  This will help Carey focus on what matters most: limiting possible exposure to COVID, getting the extra treatments she needs, focusing on healing and spending quality time with her family.  We really appreciate your love, prayers and support!
