Roger's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
We need support for my husband Roger, a retired Air Force veteran, who was diagnosed last spring with myelofibrosis, a rare pre-leukemia. Luckily he got a spot in a clinical trial at a cancer center in Houston, in the hopes of helping find improved treatments for him as well as for other patients. There is no cure yet. It can be managed like diabetes, and the doctors say he can live many years. The treatments have improved his condition.

Myelofibrosis is an “orphan” disease that doesn’t get support from cancer foundation patient assistance funds.  We have to drive and stay a week in Houston once a month for his injections. We tried to arrange it so that he could get the injections with his oncologist at home, but Medicare will only cover them in Houston. We even contacted our U.S. Representative for help, but he was unable to arrange for Medicare to cover the shots here.

Because of an insurance glitch, we now have medical expenses from my recent emergency room visit for a concussion.

Our retirement funds are slipping away because of medical and travel expenses. We want to travel to our daughter’s wedding in August, and we only need travel expenses because she is paying for her wedding. We saved for this, but we may have to spend those savings and miss her wedding. It’s an important milestone in our lives that means so much to all of us, especially Roger.

Donations will be used for medical and travel expenses to Houston. If we receive anything over the amount we are asking, we will donate it to MD Anderson for myelofibrosis clinical trials.
