Support Danny's Recovery Journey
- Updates below!
- I'm Shelly and I am hoping to raise some funds on behalf of my grandson Danny. Danny is the son of my daughter Abby and son-in-law Cody, and little brother to Mazie, 9. I was uncertain about doing a GoFundMe as Cody and Abby are not ones to reach out for help but have become open to the idea.
- On May 6, 2025, our daredevil, adventurous, on-the-go kid crawled up into the bathroom sink (in the dark, mind you), turned the water on (intentionally or accidentally, we don't know, but it was the hot side), and received severe 2nd-degree burns to both legs, belly, and the palm of his right hand. They took him to the nearest ER at Bryan, who in turn, due to the critical nature of his injuries, transferred him to the burn unit at St. Elizabeth. It was there that he received xenografts to his wounds on his legs. He was sent home in less than 24 hours.
- Over the next 3 days, his temperature continued to climb, and he became more and more inconsolable, not wanting to eat or drink like he should. We took him back to St. E's on Saturday, the 12th, and said there is more going on. I was worried about infection. They ran every possible test, and of course, he was dehydrated. He also tested positive for parainfluenza and rhinovirus. So not only was the kiddo miserable from his burns, but he had acquired respiratory viruses as well. He was again admitted for 2 more nights so he could receive IV fluids and was discharged home on Monday, the 12th.
- A little back story - when Danny was born, Abby and Cody made the decision that Abby would not return to work and stay home full-time, as to be honest, you work to have someone else watch your child and have no paycheck left! Danny will be 2 in July. Abby had literally gone back to work part-time less than 2 weeks before this freak accident, and Danny had only been in daycare for a week. They thought it was time for Danny to have more social interaction with other little people.Abby will not be able to return to work until Danny's wounds are healed, which is unknown how long this will take. The bills are going to pile up soon as after being admitted to St. E's the first time, they found out that their insurance is out of network with St. E's!! They definitely plan to fight this as Danny had to be seen by burn specialists, and St. E's is the only burn center in the area. They have a high deductible to meet with lost wages, future appointments, and wound care.
- This has been one of the most emotional, exhausting experiences we have encountered. This has been so, so hard on Danny, sissy, mommy, daddy, and his grandparents that any little help will be ever so appreciated. Lots of prayers for comfort and fast healing are also needed. We work very hard every day to make sure Danny is drinking enough and eating foods high in protein to help with healing. We look forward to Danny returning to his happy, playful self and even his naughty side when he knows he shouldn't do something but looks over his shoulder with his side eye wondering if anyone is watching We love you so much, buddy, and hate that you are going through this!! We thank you all so much for your words of kindness and prayers!
5/16/25 Update: We saw Dr Rivera this morning for follow up to his burns. His belly is nearly healed...has a small scab yet. There are many areas to his legs that are healing as expected. Some pieces of the Oasis grafts that were used were peeling off so this was trimmed away revealing fresh new tissue that is coming in. There are larger areas, however, that are taking longer to heal and potentially were 3rd degree burns so the Oasis graft is not going to help. We are to continue to do daily dressing changes (with cleaning of his wounds which is hard for this gramma to scrub like I should but will get er done). We return Wednesday for follow up. Depending on if he has made any progress, it is highly likely that they will have to graft areas with his own skin ( which is either taken from his buttocks, back or scalp). They plan on this happening as they've booked time to five him some sleepy med to do the rest of clean up and regraft with his skin. We and his prayer warriors are going to hope and pray that we can get this kiddo to eat and drink better. This is so important for wound healing. Rivera said we do have the option of readmittimg him to the burn unit for hydration and nutrition but we would like to avoid that so our goal is to drink drink drink and hope he eats better. Please continue to pray for our little Danny that he finds an appetite, feels comfort, and gets stronger every day!! We still have a long road ahead!
Update 5/21/25:
Excellent new today! Saw the burn doc today and he said Danny has done some great healing over the last! The porcine grafts were removed and in some areas he is actually healed with new skin. Each inner thigh and left groin has continued open areas that we will continue to dress daily with a different treatment. He has another appointment next Friday. 5/30, for follow up. Any further skin grafting is on hold at this time and will focus on healing until then! We ask for continued prayers for healing and new skin growth! We pray that Danny's appetite continues to grow so he gets that protein that is vital! We are so tickled that things are going in the right direction! I also hope that he gets braver to stand up and start walking! I think it's gonna happen!
