Sacred Slugs
In Sacred Slugs, Maya is a restless millennial trying to escape her life—and herself—by impulsively joining a remote Hawaiian jungle commune. But instead of the peaceful retreat she imagined, she stumbles into a world that’s equal parts paradise and chaos: eccentric characters, culty vibes, and her own spiraling delusions.

Led by Sage, a half-charismatic, half-deranged mystic, “The Hive” is an off-grid experiment in self-sufficiency. Its residents include Ocean, a canceled raw vegan influencer trying to rebuild her life; Zara, a sarcastic no-nonsense organizer who keeps the commune running; and Keli’i, a brooding survivalist with a mysterious past. At first, Maya is enchanted by the lush beauty of the island and the community’s anything-goes ethos, but things take a surreal turn as her own bipolar mania creeps in. Reality becomes slippery, and what began as a journey of self-discovery morphs into something much darker—and way funnier.

As Maya navigates bizarre morning meetings, jungle work-trade, and increasingly unhinged dynamics, she wrestles with big questions: Who is she outside of society’s expectations? Is this “finding herself” thing just a privileged delusion? And why the hell does everyone keep drinking that gross “jungle juice”?

The book is a darkly funny, fast-paced exploration of belonging, identity, and self-reinvention. It’s Alice in Wonderland meets The Beach meets David Sedaris—a surreal, biting journey through the absurdities of the “Eat, Pray, Love” culture and the messiness of being human. At its heart, Sacred Slugs is about what happens when we try to run from ourselves—and the hilarity and heartbreak of realizing we can’t.

Drawing from the author’s 15 years living in the Hawaiian jungle, the novel also sheds light (with sharp humor and zero preachiness) on the impact of oblivious hippies on local communities and the hidden costs of “paradise.” If you love stories that blend laugh-out-loud absurdity with poignant moments of clarity, this is the book for you.

Prepare to laugh, cringe, and maybe cry a little. Sacred Slugs is self-discovery gone gloriously off the rails.

A sneak peak of some of my fave meme-able quotes (not the funniest, I gotta save those for the book reveal!):

"A morbidly obese tabby cat waddled across the garden path, its belly swinging like a furry pendulum. Noice."

"When I got to the Hive, I glanced at the clock on the wall: 3:27 a.m. Great! I have some quiet time before all the maggots wake up and come and crawling in."

"I stared at the cartoonish flowers, feeling personally attacked by their ridiculous, overly friendly demeanor, like they were mocking me with their stupidity. Covering them completely felt too antagonizing, so I went for a compromise: a little creative enhancement. One daffodil got buck teeth, another a crack pipe, and the third a whip. Better. Much better."

"“The ancestors do not like the taste of white meat,” the warrior mutters, his tone dripping with disgust."

"Hanging. A man—or the idea of one—suspended from a tree that had no business growing here. A laugh slipped out before I could stop it. “Oh, wow,” I whispered to no one. “Nice decor.”

"The second we stepped into the cabin, I launched myself at him, lips colliding with his. I could feel slight hesitation, but he kissed me back, his lips hungry against mine. My tongue slid into his mouth, grazing over his teeth. Smooth, polished—perfect. My tongue traced further, savoring the texture, until it hit the sharp edge of a filling.
I pressed against it, pushing my tongue harder, the sensation electric and strange. I felt a sting as the tip of my tongue nicked itself on the filling. A metallic tang bloomed in my mouth, and I chuckled softly against his lips. I was really turned on."
