Dear family, friends and well-wishers, Queenie Walls Randall needs your help. Now. For reasons no one could ever hope to comprehend, this beautiful woman was struck with the first symptoms of a most brutal disease just months following her hard-earned retirement. After an extended period of worsening symptoms and early misdiagnoses, she received the definitive diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” in September of 2016.
Queenie Walls Randall, a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend is loved by all who know her. She devoted many years of sacrifice for her family and work, including caring for her loving husband, Burl, until his untimely death in 2008.
During the last decade Queenie has celebrated many milestones, including becoming a Golden Soror in her beloved sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., attending her only child’s wedding in 2009 to our son, David, and retiring from Howard University in June of 2015. The ultimate highlight for Queenie, however, was witnessing the birth of her one and only grandchild, Ryan, whom she fondly calls “Apple Pumpkin.” Queenie has been an integral part of Ryan’s life from day one. Queenie always looked forward to spending time with Ryan and her family. All who know Queenie know that her world begins and ends with Ryan. The love and bond they share is remarkable. A true love affair of the heart!! Queenie, who lives alone and does not drive, now struggles with significantly restricted breathing, talking, ability to use her arms and legs, and emaciation which has required the surgical implantation of a feeding tube. Queenie has a caregiver, Tonya, who assists her for four hours a day, Monday through Friday. When Tonya is not there, Queenie relies on her daughter, April, family, and friends to assist her with her many daily and medical needs. The one wish this beautiful woman, who has given so much to so many over her life, has expressed is that she be able to live out these last days, months - and with God’s grace years - of her life in her own home.
ALS is a relentless disease that will day by day rob Queenie of every function carried out by motor neurons – movement, breathing, speaking, eating – yet spare her mind. She will become completely dependent on the care of others until this merciless disease takes her life from her, and her, from all those who love her.
At a time when she should be enjoying her retirement years, she is instead faced with overwhelming financial and medical needs. Medicare helps some, but does not provide for any of round the clock health aid or nursing care that she needs or the needed home modifications such as a chair lift. Medicare simply does not adequately assist Queenie and others like her in fighting this terribly cruel disease.
Please help our efforts on Queenie’s behalf to provide her the financial ability to remain in her own home for as long as she can. In the home she purchased with her loving husband over thirty years ago, in which she raised her only daughter and was open to all who knew her. Please share Queenie’s story with friends, family, and colleagues in on Facebook, by email and in person. Please consider making a donation to help with Queenie’s care. In the unlikely event there are unused GFM funds at the time of Queenie’s passing, they will be used for funeral expenses, with the remaider to be donated to the ALS Association to aid them in their fight to find a cure for this disease and to advocate on behalf of all of the Queenies in the world. Most of all, please remember Queenie in your prayers.
On behalf of Queenie, April, Ryan and David, thank you for your prayers, warm wishes, and support.
