Help send Beverly to Camp Sweeney, an educational camp for children diagnosed with Type 1 (juvenile) Diabetes!
My niece, Beverly, is a bright, caring young woman. She is one of the most thoughtful people I have ever met. Truly. She is 17 years old and is a typical teenager in most ways. She is active in the community theatre, is homeschooled, has many friends, has volunteered at the Dallas zoo. And Beverly also lives with Type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes). She was diagnosed at 7 years old.
Recently her mother shared with me about the struggles and health challenges Beverly faces on a daily basis as a result of her condition.
Right now, each doctor visit Beverly has shows that her numbers are not anywhere near they need to be to support health. We can’t give you an accurate count of how many times she has had to poke herself to test her blood sugar or take a shot over the years (an estimated 21,000 times), but that is not what we focus on. We want Beverly to have a healthy, long life. And we recognize that she needs more support than we know how to give.
Enter Camp Sweeney - it's designed for that exact purpose! Camp Sweeney is an educational camp that specifically helps children and young adults learn how to manage their diabetes.
The teen years have been rough and Beverly struggles with wanting to be “normal” like all the other people she is around. For the most part, Beverly keeps a positive attitude, but it is never a good sign when many of her friends she sees regularly do not even know she is diabetic. The camp is designed to help her gain the tools she needs to better manage her condition and how to negotiate daily life as a diabetic, something she has been struggling with.
Beverly loves the outdoors and this camp would be the perfect environment for her to learn she can manage her diabetes and still do the things she loves!
Going to this camp will help prepare her for life skills, give her self-confidence to take care of her body and help her to continue to take care of herself into her late teen years and adulthood. She'll be attending camp with other children, young men, and young women who also have diabetes. This will be something new for Beverly! Right now, she doesn’t know many diabetic children. It will be helpful to be around people who have this in common with her.
Our goal would be for Beverly to be able to attend Camp Sweeney in Texas the summer of 2016. Registration is open and it costs a minimum of $3,400 to send a camper for their 3 week camp.
Her doctor has been encouraging her to go for several years now, but we can’t afford the camp. Beverly is finally willing to give it a try. Your donations (any amount) will help! Every penny that you donate will go directly to helping Beverly get to Camp Sweeney!
The next camp (session 1) starts June 5th, 2016. Any amount you can give will be so very appreciated!
I honestly can't thank you enough. Beverly is a light in our lives and we have great hope that this camp will give her what she needs to learn how to take excellent care of herself. Camp Sweeney promises to offer Beverly a chance at a healthy, full life. Thank you so much for your help to get her there!
