In March of 2020, our mom was diagnosed with a rare condition called Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS), a premalignant plasma cell disorder that can, in some cases, progress into multiple myeloma.
Six years later, her condition has developed into multiple myeloma, and she will soon begin a 36-month clinical trial in hopes of slowing the progression of the disease.
Our mom has spent her life caring for others. She was a devoted caregiver to our dad throughout his battle with brain cancer, and dedicated much of her career to helping children with rare diseases as a nursing aide at Gillette Children’s Hospital. She has always been the first to show up for others in their time of need.
For the first few months, the trial will require weekly visits to Mayo Clinic Rochester for overnight stays to receive chemotherapy. During this time, she will also be reducing her hours at work so she can focus fully on her health and healing.
We are raising funds to help ease the financial burden of this journey, including travel, lodging, and lost wages.
Our mom is our brightest light and greatest source of strength. If you are able to contribute or share this fundraiser, it would mean so much to our family. Thank you for your kindness, support, and keeping her in your thoughts.
With love and gratitude, Michaela and Natalie Schmidt
