Send youth leaders to APHA 2016!

Donation protected
The Community-Based Public Health (CBPH) Caucus  wants to support 5 committed youth leaders to attend and participate in the 2016 American Public Health Association (APHA) Conference in Denver, CO!

What is the CBPH Caucus?
“Community Lies at the Heart of Public Health” guides the Community–Based Public Health (CBPH) Caucus , a part of the American Public Health Association (APHA).

When interventions are rooted in the values, knowledge, expertise, and interests of the community itself. And when health encompasses the physical, mental, social, spiritual, environmental, and economic well–being of a community and its members, success is greatest. We build on the power of equal partnerships, including community–based organizations, academic institutions, and health agencies, collaboratively addressing community health issues. Community and academic partners across the United States formed the CBPH Caucus in 2000 to promote the practice and understanding of CBPH in research, teaching, and practice. CBPH is an assets-based approach to public health where communities in partnership with public health practitioners and academics identify issues, mobilize resources, and implement strategies to solve problems.

Who is the CBPH Youth Council?
One of the groups within the Caucus is the Youth Council. The Community–Based Public Health Caucus founded the Youth Council in 2010 to provide a national voice for youth to focus on addressing a variety of public health issues such as exercise and nutrition, sexual health, and emotional well–being. We are youth activists ages 13–24 years old (including middle– and high–school youth, and undergraduate and graduate students). We are supported by the Youth Council Support Team, which includes youth allies, near peer mentors, and representatives of youth serving–organizations. We work to

· Establish and maintain a youth council that builds youth capacity to participate in community–based public health
· Create pathways to public health careers
· Develop a national platform for youth to advocate for adolescent and young adult health issues
· Establish and sustain an advisory committee of adult allies and anchor organizations to provide guidance and direction for the youth council.

Youth attending APHA!
As a part of our efforts, the CBPH Caucus and Youth Council strive to bring youth voice to the table at the annual APHA conference (youth participants from the 2015 APHA conference are shown in the image above).

The 5 youths who participate in this year's APHA conference will not only enhance their own professional development as future leaders in public health, but will also elevate youth voice within the field of public health, to the benefit of all of APHA!

To support these youth, we need your help! APHA is a costly four-day conference, and we want to cover each youth participant fully. Help us to raise $6425 by October 31st!

It takes $1285 to support one youth participant for all four days of the conference. Here’s the breakdown of what your donation will go to support:

$70 –one day's meals for one youth
$80 – one night’s stay for one youth
$85 – APHA membership for one youth
$270 – APHA conference registration for one youth
$330 – Airfare for one youth

Throughout the campaign, we’ll be sharing personal stories from youth leaders who can best capture the true impact of participating in APHA. Your contribution will help to bring critical youth perspective and passion into this significant public health arena.

Thank you for your support!
