Yousef Makki Foundation

The Yousef Makki Foundation was born from the legacy of 17-year-old Yousef Makki. Yousef was a South Manchester raised teenager of Anglo-Lebanese heritage who attended Manchester Grammar School (MGS) between 2013 and 2019.

Despite Yousef’s humble beginnings in life, he worked hard and was awarded a full bursary scholarship to attend MGS where he became determined to become a heart surgeon after university. Yousef was known to help younger students with their maths homework and he was a keen amateur boxer in his local community. Like many teenagers of his age, he was a lover of music, sport and fashion and he had an infectious smile.

Yousef’s life was taken from him in March 2019 when acting as a peacemaker between two friends - one of whom stabbed him through the heart - whilst his family believe he was trying to mediate a truce. Yousef’s mother, Debbie Makki, worked and saved tirelessly to give Yousef as many opportunities in life as she could, but extracurricular activities and school trips were often a real struggle to afford. Debbie Makki sadly died in 2020 following Yousef’s killing, leaving 4 children and 5 grandchildren. Following entirely unjust and unsatisfactory criminal and coronary investigations into Yousef’s death, Yousef’s family have now begun a new focus in their ongoing quest for justice and the preservation of Yousef’s legacy.

The Yousef Makki Foundation launches on the third anniversary of Yousef's death with an initial focus on fundraising and awareness. As 2022 progresses, through a discretionary application process that will be simple, transparent and accessible, the foundation shall offer young people who have had a tough start in life access to vital hardship funding opportunities, with a focus on supporting young people that display a clear hunger to achieve educationally and give back to their community - as Yousef Makki himself did.
