Your Kokua Needed for Aunty Betsy’s Stroke Recovery

Aoha Duenas/Jhun 'Ohana.

This is Sheri, aunty Betsy's daughter on Maui. My brother Neal & I are reaching out to you at the request of our mom, Betsy Ho Soon Jhun Hinau.

Mom suffered a stroke at the end of October. She was not feeling"right" for a while & her right leg was not "cooperating." She attributed the dizziness & complications to vertigo which has plagued her for most of her life. After falling out of bed several times & collapsing in the bathroom, Neal took her to the ER.

I might add here that asking her to go to the doctor is like asking her to climb Everest! She is one hard headed Korean. Also, having been told that prior symptoms were just due to her advanced age, she was reluctant to go in.

After numerous tests @ Hilo Hospital the stroke was diagnosed. After 2 weeks in the hospital she was sent to the Legacy rehabilitation facility where she remains until the present.

Her initial 20 days of care was covered by her Kaiser Insurance. Then, she lost the use of her right arm/hand. Her stay @ Legacy has been delayed twice.

Neal & I have been paying out of pocket for both her care and getting the house ready for her to come home. Wheelchair accessible ramps, urinary catheters, bed rails, revamping her room & bath....the list goes on.

She will also be in need of at home health care when she is released.
Mom asked Neal and I to contact Kamaka and ask him to kokua us. This was something we had not considered.

if so, it would have been as a last resort attempt.

But, she said she's not too proud to ask. With the mounting financial burden looming in front of us, Neal and I agreed.

We realize everyone has families and financial responsibilities of their own. So--- if can, THANK YOU! If cannot, it's totally understandable.

Mom is the last of the original Duenas/Jhun clan. So many times she has cried tears of grief and asks WHY she's the last one.

She misses her much loved sisters & brothers. As well as the nieces & nephews who have passed on.

She was blessed with a 93rd birthday on 11/28. We are the ones Blessed to still have her in our lives.

Mahalo nunui to all of you from our pu'uwai!
Me ke aloha,
Sheri & Neal
