Post production: Young Sick Bacchus
UPDATE: due to all the beautiful support we got from our backers, we shot Young Sick Bacchus (YSB) at the end of August. After a brief break we are in post production now, aiming to premiere the film at a festival in early 2022.
We need your help though as we did fall a bit short on the fundraising front. We need 3k to complete the post production: color, editing, sound and the soundtrack are all in the works and this requires your help. Please share with friends and family and of course any additional support would be immensely helpful! Check out the new stills from set too.
YSB is a haunting manifestation of internal pain and yearning to be seen, felt, and understood in a world that isn’t made for you.
A shy art student named Kirk struggles to capture the essence of a self-portrait in the school studio. A kind, cute, and very charming fellow student named Jacob stops to help. While Jacob guides Kirk towards a better painting, a day dream comes to life that highlights both the palpable rapport and depths of loneliness Kirk experiences as he yearns for Jacob. When the reality of the situation bleeds into the edges of this delicate dream, the fantasy and reality of the situation melt, crumble, and coalesce into pain and agony.
After graduating from SCAD’s production design program, Jax worked at Netflix then on Marvel’s Wandavision before the pandemic turned his attention to pursuing his long-time passion of writing/directing.
Soon after finishing his first script, Being and Nothingness, he was joined by collaborator/producer Blair Argust, then swiftly built a wildly successful team of creatives (mostly SCAD alumni).
Once every department was staffed, we spent the last year in endless zoom meetings and pouring over the script to create a substantial body of artwork, designs and then shot list and budgets.
We’re currently fundraising for the feature film. While we’re receiving a lot of interest within the industry, producing a short film that incorporates some of the themes and aesthetics of the feature will provide us with tangible proof of concept to further our mission.
Producing Young Sick Bacchus will showcase our team’s ability to work within a tight timeline and budget while delivering professional, compelling content. It will be our calling card for potential partners and investors for the much larger endeavor that is Being and Nothingness.
Both the feature film and Young Sick Bacchus are not just painful, queer stories with surrealist flourishes, but poignant films that speak to an experience often unexamined in media: Queer erasure and the loneliness that comes from being othered. This is a queer story told by a queer person, with queer actors.
By backing this short you’re participating as a collaborator. Together we will build a beautiful springboard that unlocks further investment for Being in Nothingness while enjoying the visual feast that comes from Jax’s imagination.
We’re looking for backers who see the merit in queer identity, who care about the struggle queer youth face every single day, and for people that have the foresight to see how a small investment now, pays dividends in the future and for a large number of people clamoring for content like this.
Our mission is not just about amplifying representation. It’s about elevating queer stories and excellence. This is a short film that will spark conversations, providing a healing moment for many while amplifying empathy within the broader audience.
Thank you for backing this important mission. We are eternally grateful for you joining our team and will keep you up to date with our newsletter as soon as you donate what you can.
