I was honored to meet Brandy and her husband, Benjamin, at MD Anderson Cancer Center after she was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma. In all my years of oncology work, no one has touched my heart more than her. She was in her first trimester of pregnancy with her 4th child when she first found a hard knot in her inguinal lymph node. She was eventually diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma. And this is where her story will touch you. She refused treatments to protect her baby. She knew the risk she was taking, and the weight of the world was on her shoulders, but she could not make the choice to save herself and kill her child. And of course, cancer had spread and went to her brain and multiple organs, and she was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic melanoma. She was given 3-6 weeks to live, but she is a fighter and is still fighting today. After someone is first diagnosed, people are there lending a helping hand. But the longer a person lives, those helping hands fade away. Let’s not forget Brandy and what a wonderful mother she is. She cannot work right now, and her husband works two jobs and still has to make it paycheck to paycheck. In a year that has been horrible for us everyday, healthy people, I couldn’t imagine living in a time when we all fear COVID and fighting cancer while trying to raise four babies. If anyone needs to catch a break and receive some help, it’s this family. So please come together and share this with everyone you know and let’s help the Hopkins family out. I know the family will appreciate it so much, and it would relieve some of the financial burdens so they can focus more on Brandy, her health, and the kids.
