My Peace Corps counterpart, Isatou Ceesay, continues to work on ways to improve the lives of people in The Gambia and the environment.

Back in 1998, we started a women's group focusing on recycling, income generation, and community development. The group continues under the name Women Initiative Gambia.

Isatou is now working with schools on a program called Young Environmental Heroes. The project is working with 20 schools, focusing on environmental issues, agricultural issues, waste management, income generation, and confidence building. The students are doing public speaking and self-esteem building activities.

The group has recently planted 3,000 seedlings of a variety of trees. The students are responsible for taking care of their trees.
