Zane's Cancer journey- Supporting the McHugh's

Donation protected
If you know Zane or Carleen McHugh, chances are they are one of the most giving couples you’ve met (if not THE most). Whether it’s a ride, food, money, household repairs (shout out for fixing my door seal!), or someone to listen, they are there to help. It is not help out of obligation, but out of the genuine love they feel for others. They are exactly the people you would want investing their time with your student, which is what they can be found doing most of the year with the middle school students at Fellowship Church. I am thankful to have such genuine friends in my life that truly make the world better. If you are anything like me, ever since hearing the news of Zane’s cancer, you’ve been wondering how you can help. (I’ve honestly never felt such a need to feed people…why this the default??)

For those who don’t know the background, Zane was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in February 2020. It has been a whirlwind since then consisting of chemo treatments, hospital stays, blood transfusions, lumbar punctures, and more (not to mention a global pandemic occurring in the midst of it). An extra layer that comes with this type of cancer is that a bone marrow transplant is a must. Last week they had consults with the team in Nashville that will be completing the transplant and everything is in order to proceed as planned, so next week starts the transplant journey. This includes a 20+ day stay at the hospital and 75-100 days of post-transplant care. During the 100 days, a requirement is that he has to stay in Nashville and be within 30 minutes of the hospital where the transplant took place. Typically, this hospital provides housing for the post-transplant care, but with the current Covid-19 restrictions, it is not an option. Thanks to recommendations from others who have experienced this themselves, they were able to find Med Share Housing Solutions! It is 5 minutes from his hospital and provides the necessary setup for post-transplant needs.

As you can imagine, it has been a time full of twists and turns, not knowing what each day may bring. Yet we have watched them face it head on with faith, determination, and still, so much joy. They have had an incredible community response in surrounding them with support, all kinds of food, visits (…pre-Covid-19), and, most importantly, prayer. If you asked them, they would say they have gotten all they need or could ever want through this time from their family and friends, and that they are so grateful for all that has been done. However, as can be expected, there is a large cost associated with the kind of care needed to beat this cancer. While insurance covers a majority of these costs, a fraction of a lot is still a lot! Zane and Carleen would never ask anyone to give financially in their time of need, but I know they would be the first to give if the situation were reversed. I am setting up this fund to support two of the biggest supporters I have had in my life. Any money donated would go directly to Zane and Carleen to be used towards the insurance deductible, traveling costs to and from Nashville, the post-transplant housing, and other transplant related needs.

Zane has a long road ahead of him, but he is ready to face it head on! Please continue to keep Zane and his family in your prayers.
