Help us fly Young Ambassadors to Berlin, Germany to participate in a youth-focused transatlantic cultural diplomacy program.
Hi, Prof. John Long, retired, here. Many thanks to everyone who supported our 2016 Transatlantic cultural/educational/sports Project-Chicago. It was exciting and successful. See the above picture of the participants. This project is the results of two community-based organizations, the Lilydale First Baptist Foundation of Chicago, Il, and Kreuzberg Beats Basketball Club of Berlin, Germany working together to produce world citizens leaders and peace.
We are seeking support for airfare for 10 talented African American high school students from low-income families living in at-risk communities on the south side of Chicago who will participate in the Young Ambassadors-Berlin program, a ten-day transatlantic cultural/educational/ sports peace, and leadership project that will take place June 28, 2018, in Berlin, Germany. These young people will improve their German language skills that they learned in the project along with participating in educational and sports leadership activities.
This summer, we will travel to Berlin with 10 of the 20 African American youths who participated in the Chicago project to participate in leadership and peace workshops, language training, sports, and cultural enrichment activities with their German peers.
We are asking you to help us support these emerging world citizen leaders. My group had agreed to raise the vast majority of the cost of the airfare ticket for youth. The airfare ticket is $1,100. We have asked the parents to contribute a small portion of the airfare based on their income and ability to raise additional funds. This project is very important to the development of the youths. Thus, the lack of funds for the youth will not be an obstacle to participation. Your donation will help our group pay at least 70 percent of the students' airfare.
The cost of room and board, local transportation, and cultural events will be paid by our group and the Kreuzberg Beats Basketball club.
Goal: Our goal is to create a generation of world citizen African Americans by establishing a pipeline consisting of study abroad programs in higher education and developing in the youths, confidence, educational engagement, self-responsibility, and resilience that is transformative.
Background: These youths participated in the first transatlantic cultural diplomacy project that was hosted by my organization, the Lilydale First Baptist Foundation in Chicago. Fifteen young Germans and their chaperones participated in a 12-day cultural/educational/ sports program in the summer of 2016. It was a great success. Please go to U-tube website and type in Kreuzberg Ambassadors-Chicago and you will see some of the activities that took place. Many myths of African American youths and communities and of Germany were dispelled during that time. The German youths had the opportunity to share and play with their African American peers.
The Project: The young people will be participating in a unique 10-day language/cultural and education project with their German peers who come from similar backgrounds in Berlin. The project is aptly named The Young Ambassadors-Berlin project. Listed below are some of the activities:
Workshops: The major purpose of the workshops is to bring students together to discuss examine social and educational issues that each group face. The German student faces the question, “Who is a German? Whereas the African American struggle with equity and equality in American society. However, alienation of both groups is the common denomination. Workshops have been developed to help the youths address these issues
Cultural exposure/competence activities: To help the American students understand the history and culture of Germany, they will explore many cultural attributes of the city-state of Berlin, Germany and explore the rich diversity of the city.
International Basketball Camp: The shared experience of the transnational groups is tied to growing up in an urban area and being socialized in today's digital age that is informed by pop culture – music and sports, particularly rap and basketball. In that sense, the group speaks one language, and, as we have seen, and bond.To establish close ties and remove any boundaries from the beginning, the physical contact in their sport of choice acts as a catalyst.
German language course: The Chicago students will receive until the exchange an extracurricular German offer with teaching material from Goethe Institute-Chicago. Its "Education Hub" project group of the Atlantic Initiative is piloting a pilot project by digitally linking German-American tandems with each other. It will continue on a daily basis during the 10-day project.
