Thank you all for taking my calls, reading these messages and for support of the Gibson family - it has been a pleasure talking to old pals and “meeting” new ones. It has been emotional and inspiring to hear support for Jen over and over again, although it has not surprised me one bit considering the kind of person she is to all of us. The message is clear…You MS’d with the wrong Girl!
As you all now know, after months of careful consideration, Jen has decided her best treatment option is to have nonmyleoablative HSCT (Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation) at Clinica Ruiz in Puebla, Mexico. She will be in the care of the esteemed Dr. Guillermo José Ruiz Argüelles and his team for 28 days of intensive treatment beginning on Dec 9, 2019. Other than through clinical trials, for which Jen does not fit the narrow criteria, HSCT is not currently available in Canada. It is not a new, unproven, or fringe procedure. Clinical trials for HSCT have been happening for over 15 years, and the most recent findings published by the Journal of the American Medical Association found HSCT highly successful at halting progression of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis in the large majority of patients. Jen and Duff believe, as do others, with time it will become standard treatment for MS, but as every relapse leads to more damage to her central nervous system - time is of the essence. I have already spoken with enough of you to know that you share my opinion that if Jen is ready to embark on this brave journey - we will all do what she needs to make it happen.
The treatment and associated fees come at a cost of $90 000 and we are committed to a few different fundraising strategies at this time and are open to others in the future. There will also be a Care Calendar set up when Jen returns home in January to aid with meals, cleaning services and driving. Jen will require a caregiver to be with her for the month and her sister, her amazing friend and her husband will all take turns being in Mexico with her. We are thrilled to announce that we have successfully booked flights for Jen and her team with cash and airmile donations!...if you have extra airmiles we would graciously accept Sobey’s, Safeway or Shell gift cards (airmiles charges a fee to transfer miles- so please order them to your account and drop off or mail them to the Gibson Family).
We will be collecting funds all summer in preparation for the deposit required in early October. Please know that we are grateful for every donation in any amount. It has taken a tremendous effort to convince Jen and Duff to accept these gifts and everyone of you made it clear that we are far more stubborn than them on this one! I will keep you all up to date on fundraising efforts and again, thank you for being on Team Jen…it’s a damn winning team.
With gratitude,
Deanne
