Thank you all for taking the time to read this. I hope my words show all of the emotion in my heart!
On 2/25/21 I met the strongest, solid, loving, most beautiful woman. Skye Standing Cloud. Skye and I met by chance and ended up talking, uninterrupted, for a few hours during the workday. And if you know me, that never happens!
Skye and I were meant to be in each others lives, and now I’m stepping in to help my new friend. My friend Skye has 4 beautiful children, Joel Thunder Standing Cloud (15), Caleb Eli Cathey (13), Branson Lane Cathey (10) and McKinley Adele Standing Cloud (1, the cutest little girl!). Caleb has been in the hospital since Jan 22, 2021 with life threatening pancreatic failure. Skye, raises her kids on her own, has no other family besides her wonderful sister, Crystal and dear friend Melanie, and has been by Caleb’s side this entire time. She hasn't been able to work or be with her other kids. They are fearing this is genetic as her 10 year old, Branson, is starting to have pains and will be having an ultrasound this week. Please help me to help them! She has truly been a blessing in my life and I'm so thankful that I get to love them all from now on! Please see below about Caleb and his surgery and keep him and his family close in your heart! All my love, Sara
Caleb was having horrible stomach pains on January 21, 2021 which lead him to the ER at Summerville Medical, in Summerville, SC. After some time, they were going to send him home, but he continued to get sick and was in so much pain. His mother requested additional testing.
After a blood test, he was admitted for high levels, that needed to be further evaluated. After receiving fluids and medicine to help with pain, his blood was tested again, and the doctor advised that he needed additional help from the Children’s Hospital at MUSC (South Carolina) due to his levels increasing.
These levels were dangerous for an adult, much less a 13-year boy. He was admitted on Friday, January 22, 2021 to the PICU. Over the weekend his triglycerides were extremely high, and his body started to shut down. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis, but the doctors still weren’t sure why this was happening.
He was on 100% oxygen, the doctors were watching his liver, kidneys, and Caleb was retaining fluids in his body (9 liters) that they were not able to drain. After further weeks of testing, a PIC line for the IV (that has caused an open wound because they couldn’t use any veins), and keeping him stable, he was diagnosed with Necrotizing Pancreatitis.
The middle of his pancreas ended up dying and closing off the two healthy ends of his pancreas. The toxins kept building up. A cyst formed that pushed on his stomach and pancreas that made them into a pancake and caused so much pressure and pain.
The doctors gave his mom an example of what was happening to his body. “it’s like a bomb went off in his stomach”. All of the toxins were released into his body.
A blood transfusion was necessary at this point, and nothing else could be done until his body was able to handle any type of surgery.
Once he was able to come off some of the medication, antibiotics, oxygen, and able to move around/understand what was going on, he was ready to start getting more nutrients in his body to prepare for surgery.
He has lost 60 lbs. at this point and has had three feeding tubes. The nurses and doctors worked extremely hard to get his body prepared. Caleb had his Pancreatic Necrology surgery on March 4, 2021.
They removed as much of the dead tissue that they were able to get at this point, removed the cyst along with 3 liters of fluid/toxins. They made holes into to the end parts of the pancreas to let it drain any toxins that have been sitting for the past 6 weeks.
CALEB IS IN RECOVERY AND FIGHTING HARD! He is battling serious pain. We don’t know what the next step is.
After he recovers from this surgery (at least month), they may remove the middle of the pancreas and reconnect the two ends to see if everything can function like it should.
If they have to do the second procedure, it will be a very HIGH RISK case and will Caleb will be in PICU for an additional month at least.
