Whitby, Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington and surrounding villages have been named ' A Business Improvement District' This means that 1354 business along a 96 mile stretch of coastline will be forced into paying an additional 1.5% ON TOP of business rates to a private limited company, who are not answerable to ANYONE.
This tax, once enforced, will be payable every year for a 5 year term
We have, at last after 12 months of campaign managed to engage with a lawyer who understands the 'BID legislation'.... Scarborough Council have agreed to fund an independent investigation.
Having come this far, we can't just rely on goodwill from councils and their employees. We need at least £2,000 to fund our lawyer who can present our evidence in clear cut and non prejudiced terms. £20 per business on the Yorkshire Coast will go a long way towards this. The least we can hope for is a re-ballot. IF we get to re-ballot, any surplus (if agreed by businesses) would be used to fund a 'NO' ballot
