York Avenue Elementary School’s Odyssey of the Minds Team is heading to World Finals at Iowa State University… and honestly, it still feels a little surreal to say that. This is the first time a team from York Avenue has ever made it this far, and they are representing not just their school, but the entire North Penn School District on an international stage. Their problem, “Life’s a Ball,” has pushed them to think creatively, problem solve, and work together in ways that go far beyond a typical classroom experience. They’ll be taking the stage alongside teams from across the country and around the world, and they are beyond excited for the opportunity.
If you’re not familiar with Odyssey of the Minds, it’s one of those programs that really lets kids shine in ways you don’t always get to see. It blends STEM and the arts, but more importantly, it builds confidence, teamwork, and resilience. The biggest thing? The kids do everything themselves. Every idea, every design, every decision. Coaches are there to guide, but they can’t give answers or step in. Even their “spontaneous” challenge is exactly that… a surprise problem they have to solve on the spot with no preparation.
It’s been amazing to watch this team grow over the past four years, not just in skill, but in how they support each other and show up as a team. Getting to World Finals is an incredible accomplishment, but it also comes with a significant cost. We want to make sure every team member and their coaches can experience this together, especially since this is the final elementary school year for many of them. Donations will go directly toward travel, lodging, meals, and transporting everything they have worked so hard to create.
If you’re able to contribute or even just share, it truly means a lot. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these kids, and we are so excited to see them represent York Avenue on the world stage.
