Our beloved schoolmate, friend, and community member, Yonim Schweig z"l, died in a tragic accident this past summer, just shy of his 21st birthday. The OHDS Class of 2013 community has organized to create a space on campus where Yonim’s life can continue to be an inspiration to us all. His insatiable appetite for learning, his genuine curiosity, his passion to connect deeply are the seeds we hope to plant, and cultivate, in Yonim’s Memorial Garden.
Much love and thought has been invested into planning Yonim's Memorial Garden and we hope you will join us in creating this sacred space at OHDS.
We are seeking to raise $15,000 to cover the costs of the project, which include:
- Beautifying the grass area
- Paint a mural depicting an large sail with the sea, sky, and doves in the background
- Build a replica of the boat that Yonim built with his dear friends Avi, Ami, and Josh years ago. The boat will be a permanent structure inviting all to sit in nature, read a book, ponder, and meditate.
- Install a custom-made metal sculpture of doves (Yonim's namesake)
- Install a plaque bearing one of Yonim's poems
Some of the work will be donated, but we must raise $15,000 to purchase the materials and cover labor costs. Please consider making a meaningful gift from the heart. Your gift, whether it is $5 or $5,000, is greatly appreciated. The project is scheduled to begin the end of June and, ideally, be completed in time for Yonim's birthday in July 2021. The boat will be constructed off-site and will begin sooner. Gifts received now will allow us to hire contractors and, hopefully, be completed on schedule.
Yonim's Memorial Garden will be a special place where students, teachers, and guests can be surrounded by beauty, inspiration, and peace. It will be a sanctuary for music, poetry, meditation, and Jewish learning. Yonim's Memorial Garden will be a place for all to feel welcome and loved, and where Yonim's memory can remind us of how one human can truly make a difference in this world.
Thank you in advance for your consideration, and hopefully your contribution to this community endeavor. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach us through this site.
This project is being managed by the parents and students of Yonim's OHDS class of 2013, with help from Ruth Teitelbaum, Daniel Sosebee, Avi London-Wynne and Josh Zak . Yonim will forever hold a special place in our hearts and his memory will forever be a blessing for all of us.
