SMY staff and students are deeply disturbed by the humanitarian crisis unfolding on the US/Mexico border. We want to help!
RAICES (The Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, asylum-seekers and refugees in Central and South Texas. Right now they are working hard to reunite children with their parents.
Given the current situation, RAICES has had an outpouring of support but it's still not enough.
“It’s a ton of money, but we’re actually up against the federal government,” said Jenny Hixon, development director at RAICES. “They obviously have well more than $20 million to both detain and prosecute these folks. We really want to make sure that we’re able to represent everybody who needs representation.”
We'll be closing down the studio Sunday from 10AM - 12:00PM. Instead, we'll have two classes in Spiotta Park: 10:00 - 10:45 am with Taylor, and 11:00 - 11:45 am with Emma. There is a suggested donation of $20. Donations will go directly to RAICES to help those in need. Guitarist Shai Anbar will be on hand to provide music!
