Reagan Lolo's Education in France

Donation protected
I just graduated from UC Berkeley with a double major in political science and French and I am proud to become part of the world's college graduates who will use their education to turn the world into a better place for others. Please don't laugh at me, because I actually have too many reasons to feel proud about being an educated young man.

If you knew that my mother is an illiterate Haitian peasant, and if you knew that at a very young age I lived in the streets of Haiti as a homeless street kid before I was accepted at an orphanage, you would probably be proud of my new college degree also even if you have never met me before. You would probably be curious about where I plan to be in the future. Well, college is not the limit but the sky is. Because I am planning to change what leadership is in Haiti.

I have been accepted into Sciences Po, a prestigious political science school in Paris, France. Although I have already paid all the registration fees for the program, I am in need of some support to actually be able to attend the program that will start on August 20th, 2015. Specifically I am hoping to raise approximately $6,000 that will cover airfare, housing in Paris until December, visa costs, and food and transportation while I am in Paris. Anything you can give to help achieve this goal would be forever appreciated. I will keep everyone informed of not only the progress of my future academic achievements but also of my efforts to make the world especially Haiti a better place for our future generations.

Today, politics is perhaps the chief reason Haiti is as chaotic as it is today.  Almost everything official that governs the country is done in the French language. Even if most Haitians do not speak French, it is vital for political success in Haiti. My participation in this program will not only help my political knowledge, but it will enhance my ability to master the French language.

It is my greatest ambition to lead Haiti one day, not because I am so passionate about politics, but because I am extremely passionate about bettering the lives of others. It is only because politics affect the lives of so many that I decided that I want to be a part of it. Not enough good people with good qualifications, good intentions, and good leadership are doing the politics.

If you know me, you know that my name is Reagan Lolo and I am from Haiti. And you probably know that for Haitians like me education is a luxury, because generally young Haitians do not have an educational institution to go to. When there is one it is either mediocre or unaffordable or both. Therefore, it should not be a surprise to you that I am the first in the family to go to and graduate from college.

When I graduated on May 19th, 2015 from UC Berkeley with a double major in political science and French, that was the first time I had participated in an educational commencement ceremony besides the time that I did it in junior college two years ago. This is because I could not afford the required cap and gown when I completed high school in Port-Au-Prince.

My father did not acquire a high school degree. My mother has never set foot in a classroom. That made the odd of me not getting an education even greater. However, with the supports of folks who were once strangers to me, I manage to get an education and today we can proudly say that Reagan Lolo is a college educated young man.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, and they always tell young Haitians that education is their only path to freedom. The problem is there is no place to go get this education. It is for this reason my education must be used to create opportunity that I did not have for younger generations.

The walk to that promising future as a young leader has already started when I founded Konbit-Patriyòt, a socio-political movement that focuses on providing free education to children in some of Port-Au-Prince’s poorest neighborhoods. While we are a startup movement, our efforts have helping 180 children go to school every year in the neighborhood of Jacquet, Petion-ville.

I am grateful for the opportunity to study at such a competitive French educational institution. I am even more grateful for the support and any contributions provided to me. Please help me reach my goal of raising $6,000 by AUGUST 1, 2015. Without your support I will not be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Merci d’avance! “Thank you in advance!”
