Betsy has recently been diagnosed with a rare vascular disease called MALS.
After spending nearly a year dealing with debilitating chest pain, stomach issues, and a host of other problems causing widespread pain and discomfort, she was referred to the UW vascular department in October of 2025 for further evaluation and advanced testing. In mid-November, Betsy was informed that she had a rare vascular disease called MALS, as well as Nutcracker syndrome and SMAS. All of these vascular issues shed light on all the symptoms she was experiencing. The most severe symptom was the inability to eat due to extreme digestive pain and dizziness; she initially lost 22 pounds.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the symptoms of MALS, Betsy has been unable to work and support herself since June 2025. She is currently waiting to see the only specialist in Seattle who can answer questions and perform the necessary delicate surgical procedure. In November, she was given a celiac nerve block to ease stomach pain so she could eat. Unfortunately, she had a bad reaction to the procedure, and outside of the specialist she is waiting to see in January, she has been directed to the ER and a primary doctor, who are unable to help due to MALS being a rare vascular diagnosis.

Betsy needs help with expenses due to job loss. Her needs include financial assistance with relocating closer to the UW medical facility, monthly bills, transportation, alternative medical services, and supplements not covered by insurance, as well as miscellaneous out-of-pocket expenses.

The recovery is extensive and can take up to a year. A very particular diet is outlined for recovery, and other procedures may also be necessary, as this progressive disease affects many organs. This is a permanent disability.

How you can help
I have recently relocated away from Eastern Washington, where most of my support people live. I will be doing this primarily on my own. Your support, whether it's a donation, a message of encouragement, or simply sharing this fundraiser, truly makes a difference. As my friends already know, I am one tough cookie and remain strong. I truly appreciate any help you can provide to alleviate this financial strain and allow me to focus solely on my healing.

I will post regular updates to keep everyone informed on my progress.
I will be meeting with the surgeon on January 12, and surgery will be scheduled then. In the meantime, I need to relocate to be closer to the UW as soon as possible, to alleviate the hour-and-a-half drive from Camano Island.

With love and gratitude,
Betsy Drake
