Dear kind-hearted individuals,
I'm writing to you with a heavy heart and a deep sense of urgency. My name is Ruby Okidi, and I am a graduate student at Columbia University. I am reaching out to you today because I am facing a financial crisis that threatens to derail my dreams of making a positive impact in my community.
Growing up as an orphan in Kenya, I know firsthand the importance of a voice and agency for women. That's why I am passionate about promoting women's empowerment and mental health awareness. I've worked extensively with marginalized communities in my county, including creating a voice in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and leading sanitary towel drives. I've also provided psychosocial support and referrals to immigrant communities impacted by domestic violence.
I founded Lorem Counselors, an organization that provides pro bono counseling services, to help normalize therapy and address the stigma around mental health. I believe that education is key to empowering women and giving them a voice. Despite the challenges that I have faced, I am determined to make a difference in my community and beyond.
However, I am in a difficult situation. Despite receiving a scholarship, I am unable to pay the remaining tuition fee due to complications with non-profits. Adding to my burden, I am unable to work due to my visa status until the next academic year in August.
This is why I am humbly reaching out to you today. I know that with your help, I can make it through this semester and continue to the next academic year. Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a tremendous difference in my ability to achieve my goals and make a positive impact in my community.
Thank you for taking the time to read my appeal, and I hope that you will consider supporting me in this critical moment.
Sincerely,
Ruby
