Yma Family Fire Recovery
Donation protected
My 70+ year old parents had a severe fire at their uninsured home in Puerto Rico on Saturday morning 6/5/2021. Thankfully they are physically safe, though they are both suffering from the stress and anxiety associated with this traumatic experience.
It occurred primarily in my mom's room, so all of her belongings have been destroyed -- her bed, clothes, cellphone, paperwork, etc..The smoke spread all over the house, causing a significant layer of toxic soot to accumulate on the ceilings, indoor & outdoor walls, as well as the furniture.
We found a company that will clean up the space (to the tune of $4,300+) and are working on replacing items that have been damaged/destroyed, such as the wiring, windows, furniture (bed frame/mattress/dresser), and clothing/shoes for my mom. Soon, we will also have to prime and paint the space, which aside from aesthetic purposes, is meant to combat the lingering smell of smoke. We haven't gotten an estimate for that yet (because of course my dad wants to do it all himself), but either way it will be an additional cost in this dilemma.
While none of us are thrilled to ask for help, if there is anything we've learned through this experience, it is the importance of humility. We all thank you and appreciate any contribution to our recovery efforts.
