Publish a Witchy, Queer Urban Fantasy Novel!

Donation protected
I am a writer publishing under the name B. Berry, and I want to share my new urban fantasy series with the world! This gofundme is for book 1 of the Your Local Guides To The Supernatural series: How To Kill Gods & Make Friends! Featuring an ensemble cast, a stop-the-Lovecraftian-apocalypse overarching plot, and more magic and cryptids and creatures than you can shake a stick at.

The first book's manuscript is completed and polished - ready for formatting! It features witches, psychics, youkai, a very friendly demon, a selkie in a bathtub, the Danse Macabre, old school (aka virgin-chomping) unicorns, a dip into Lovecraftian mythology outside of i'a i'a Cthulhu fhtagn, a predominately LGBTQ+ cast, and a black cat familiar named Sunshine. (He used to be yellow.)

Given that I've already done most of the work - sought out beta readers and sensitivity readers, edited and polished the manuscript through several drafts - this gofundme is for the next steps in the self-publishing process: the actual publishing part. (But if there is enough overspill, it will be used to hire a professional editor! Other overspill goals include: paid reviews, marketing (and graphics for marketing), character portrait commissions, and food for the author's cat/muse.) Below you can see a breakdown of the primary goals for this fundraiser!

With $700, my goals are:
  • $350 toward Cover Design (for both ebook & print, since they have different requirements; I already have a cover designer in mind, but there are options within that price range)
  • $295 for 10 ISBNs (they come in batches of 10, but I will use 3 here - softcover, hardcover, and ebook; others will go toward future books in the series)
  • $50 for the IngramSpark fee (after much research, I've chosen IngramSpark for my hardcover publishing and likely my paperback as well)
  • $5 for gofundme fees - this is where we get into "overspill" territory. Gofundme takes fees from each donation (so as the fundraiser, I am not paying anything to host here), but I also added that "extra" $5 since whole numbers look nicer to people. Any and all overspill will be dedicated to the book and its publishing journey, whether it gets put into marketing, additional graphics, hiring an editor, hiring additional sensitivity readers, or anything else that can go into foisting a novel upon the world.

I've been working on this series for several years now and am very excited to begin properly sharing it with my audience (current and future)! I'll push for publishing this no matter what, but given how tight my personal funds are, I couldn't do this anytime soon without outside help. Which is where you come in!

(Fun fact: There will be plenty of free ebook days during the first couple of weeks after release, so I'll post those dates here so you can snag those and tell others to also snag them!)

Self-pubbing is a lot more work than people realize, and definitely a LOT more money, too. Yes, there are options to do it yourself, plus basic cover creators like Kindle offers, but I aim to deliver the best book possible, which means not relying on myself for my terrible graphic design skills.

Additional stats about the book, in case you like extra stats:
  • ~400 pages
  • ~5 books in the series
  • 3-ish main characters
  • 3-ish main plots in the first book
  • all r'lyehian (cthulhu language stuff) in the book is accurate to the canon mythos
