A Mosque for Yellowknife!

Donation protected
Yellowknife, is a City of approximately 20,000 and is the capital of the Northwest Territories. It is here where planning has been unfolding to commence construction of the first northern mosque adapting Modern Islamic Architecture!

Incorporating local materials with traditional Islamic Architecture will allow the mosque to blend seamlessly into the local environment of Canadian Shield geology, lakes and forests. An additional plus is that the planners are moving toward construction that will be both welcoming and inviting to people of diverse backgrounds and religions, including a welcoming space for both men and women. We plan on building an Islamic Centre with a community hall for social activities and programs, and a space for youth to connect. This will be an inclusive space that can also be used and enjoyed by the general public.

The Yellowknife Muslim community currently numbers about 300. We have arrived from a global community that embraces the Canadian and Islamic values of multiculturalism.

The Yellowknife Muslim community has an objective to continue to forge a united, harmonious community where cultural and religious backgrounds strengthen our connection to Allah, as well as to the greater Yellowknife population; the new mosque will reflect these values.

Our goal is to begin laying the foundation by Ramadan of 2016, Allah willing. Admittedly, this goal has been a moving target for the past four years. Despite unforeseen set-backs the project remains viable and focussed.

The newly formed Masjid Project Committee is close to securing a new location. The site will be affordable, well-located, and suitable for future expansion. Plans for the site will be posted when secured.

We have reached a critical stage where a large monetary influx is required. To date the community, with the backing of the Zubhaidah Tallab Foundation, has raised about $250,000; this is getting close to purchasing property after which the foundation for the new mosque can finally commence.

The community has now enlisted the services of renowned Muslim architect Sherif Senbel (www.studiosenbel.com) whose Studio Senbel is located in Vancouver. Sherif has created a compelling design that melds modern with traditional while incorporating local materials. Recently he hosted a Community Design Forum in Yellowknife, an idea unique to his community building approach. Design options were provided to the community members and they were given an opportunity to provide feedback.

Sherif Senbel has considerable experience designing mosques in Western Canada where he blends local materials with traditional Islamic design. These mosques are testaments to artistic, spiritual and environmental innovation. We are excited to have him on board at this critical stage in this project.

We invite you to participate now by helping to transform vision into reality.

Financial contributions will firstly go toward purchasing a new site for the mosque followed soon thereafter by design development and construction. Our partner, the Zubhaidah Tallab Foundation, will generously match donations 2 to 1. The Foundation is a reputable non-profit organization that backed the building of both the Inuvik and the Iqaluit Mosques (http://winnipegmosque.ca/announcement/donate-ramadan-iftars-wcm-zubaidah-tallab-foundation ). As a big thank you for your donations we will recognize your financial support in the following manner: If you donate $100 or more your name will be engraved on the Donor Recognition Plaque to be located in a place of honor for all to see! Donations of $1000 will be recognized with the planting of a Northern tree or bush of your choosing, and will have a plaque at the base with your name. Donations of $10,000 will be commemorated with your name imprinted on a bench located on the grounds of the mosque. If you do not want to be publicly recognized we will respectfully maintain your anonymity.

Watch for monthly updates on our website, which is soon to come! Also, please join our facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ykmasjid/

Below are some pictures of the current Islamic Centre of Yellowknife. The building is in poor condition and no longer meets the needs of the Muslim community.
