A Service Dog For Derrick
This page has been created for our classmate, Derrick Stott. Even though Derrick has suffered from seizures for most of his life, he has worked hard to live on his own, to earn a living and be active in his church and community. Derrick was blessed to qualify for a service dog to assist him daily and welcomed Finn into his home approximately 10 years ago. Finn went everywhere with Derrick, including his work at a local care center in Council Bluffs where Finn also was popular with the residents. Unfortunately Finns health deteriorated over the past several months and Finn passed away in July.
Derrick immediately contacted the Cares Foundation in Concordia, KS where he got Finn and made arrangements to get another service dog. The waiting list is long yet he was moved to the front of the list since he has gotten a service dog from them in the past. Derrick is scheduled to get his new family member the week of October 19.
Derrick's luck turned from bad to worse when the care center he worked for so many years announced in August the facility would be closing and was being demolished. He was able to work a few weeks before they no longer needed his services. Derrick is doing all he can do to seek a new job. Since he is unable to drive, he is hindered in the options he can apply and hopefully work moving forward.
Derrick has already paid the $1000 deposit for his new service dog. The remaining balance is $2500. Without work, Derrick is unable to pay for the rest of the cost. This companionship is so important to Derrick's well-being. Even more so than those of us who have family pets. We are reaching out to friends, classmates, and family to try and help Derrick raise the remaining balance to be able to get this service dog. Every little bit helps!
Thank you for taking the time to consider this!
* Update 9/17/15 - Several friends have requested that we try to raise the entire $3500 for the cost of the servicedog so Derrick can be re-paid for the deposit and use that money towards other important things. You are all the greatest!
