Yikes Co’s Year of Study encompasses a full calendar year of research and programming centering around a specific theme. This year’s theme is fight—our year will be looking at themes of queer femininity, violence, and gender empowerment. The socio-political study is one of misogyny, femicide, transphobia, and the ways in which community building can occur through sport. We’re interested in what happens when queer, BIPOC, femmes are encouraged to build space within traditionally male centred modalities.
At the end of the year we want to have creatively explored the theme of fight, by means of academic research, community discussion, and live performance. This year, our largest community event will be Fight Club, to occur July 2025.
Fight Club event will provide beginner fight choreography training, lead by Christina Fox, Christina is a non-binary, queer actor and artist based in Tkaronto. They are an Intimacy Coordinator and Fight Director, having held both roles on Nightwood Theatre and VideoCabaret’s Mad Madge (2024).
This workshop is for the girls, the gays, the queer and gender-non conforming folks that do not often get the chance to do choreographed combat on stage. It is for people who, at present, don't feel particularly comfortable going into traditional fight choreography spaces.
The funds raised will go towards paying Christina’s fees, insurance and safety costs. We are also aiming to raise some funds to go towards our admin costs for the rest of the Year.
Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated.
