Helping Hunter get back on his feet
Donation protected
In January of 2013, my Cousin Hunter was diagnosed with Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma, which is a rare type of Osteosarcoma, more commonly known as bone cancer. The tumor was located on his left tibia. In order to remove the tumor, Hunter would need a limb salvation surgery where the surgeon would remove the better part of his tibia and his entire knee, replacing the bone with a titanium prosthetic. The surgery lasted over eight hours.
After the surgery Hunter was continued on with 9 more months of chemotherapy. Because of the high doses of chemo, healing of his leg was unbelievably slow and incredibly painful. In addition to the horrible pain, Hunter also lost a major nerve in this leg which caused him to have drop foot (the inability to lift your foot up when walking).
A year after the surgery and 6 months after his completion of chemotherapy, a staph infection developed in his leg. After two unsuccessful surgeries to clean the infected site and several months of antibiotics, a decision was made to amputate his leg (above the knee). This decision was not made lightly, yet Hunter knew a better quality of life would only be possible with a new leg.
It has been over a month since Hunter's amputation surgery, and while the pain of his infected leg is gone, he is now dealing with significant Phantom pain (this is where you feel pain in the nerves of the limb that is no longer there). Despite the pain, he starts every day with a smile, a positive attitude and an amazing sense of humor.
The weeks ahead are not going to be easy for Hunter. He will soon have to learn to walk again with his new leg, which will be another challenge for him to face.
Hunter's prosthetic will cost a significant amount of money, and to help alleviate some of the medical costs, we are asking for your help.
Please join me in helping Hunter take his next step in life. .
