A Step In The Right Direction!
“For better or for worse, in sickness and in health” these are the vows Adam and I shared only 6 months ago. Being newlyweds we never expected to be testing those very vows this early in our marriage.
So here it is in a nutshell, Adam and I were on a mini vacation in Florida, visiting family and our favorite place; Disney. Our first day in the parks and Adam wasn’t feeling well but decided he wanted to forge on and try to enjoy the day and quality time with our friends.
Fast forward several hours and we were on our way to the Emergency Room to seek medical treatment. Upon arrival we found that Adam had an infection in his foot, he was admitted for intravenous antibiotics and told we would be there for 24 hours just for treatment. The infection was concerning for a number of reasons, but most importantly because he has Diabetes and suffers from Diabetic neuropathy.
Day 1, 2, and 3 pass and Adam's condition was getting worse instead of better. The antibiotics were not working and his health was worsening by the hour. Then day 4 passes (which was the worst), the morning of day 5 he had to have emergency surgery to remove the top of his foot. I know what you’re thinking, how do you remove the top of your foot? The podiatrist performed an incision and drainage surgery (IND) on May 8, and again on May 11, 2015; removing the skin and flesh down to the tendon layer on his right foot, and ankle as well as a portion on the bottom of his foot. Adam had been diagnosed with a deadly flesh eating disease called necrotizing factitious. (We would post pictures, but they are R rated and an imagine you would only see in the walking dead or party city at Halloween)
We were in Florida hospital for two weeks, we were then transferred to Saint Raphael’s here in CT where he spent another 6 days; giving him a total of 3 weeks hospitalized.
Adam is very fortunate to have his foot, its scary to think that had it been another few hours or even a day; he could have lost his foot if not part of his leg. We are left with a very long road to recovery ahead of us, his foot will never be the same and he will have permanent deformities and scaring; but the Plastic surgeon will do the best he can to make it look normal again.
Adam has been homebound since our arrival home on May 22nd. He is on a wound vac, and has a nurse that comes in three times a week to clean and dress his open wound. He has been out of work since the beginning of May and does not have any short term disability or benefits to help cover us financially while he is out of work. He will require another surgery for a skin graph, physical therapy as well as specially fitted shoes to help his feet at the end of this journey. We have weeks if not months ahead of us before we are back to normalcy.
Adam is currently on FMLA however his recovery time will extend beyond the time securing his employment; there is a great chance he will not be employed by the time he is ready to get back on his feet. As you can imagine this has taken a toll on us financially, mentally, and physically.
It pains us terribly to have to ask for help, but there comes a time in life when you have to swallow your pride and reach out to others for help. We have a wonderful support system and have had some financial support from our families up to this point, however we don’t want to be reliant on them and cause further financial strain or burden.
The last several weeks have been hard and the weeks to come are not going to get any easier, if anything they will become more difficult as we try to get Adam back on his own two feet.
Please consider helping if you can. Any contribution large or small will help make an impact on our lives during this trying time. I am prideful and strong but unfortunately I can’t do it all myself and we could use some help. "We could get by with a little help from our friends & family"
Please feel free to pass this along to family and friends; any support is greatly appreciated.
Love to all xoxo
