Yemen's children: Nurse Makiyah's Clinic

Spende geschützt
Hi everyone,

My name is Nadine and I'm a friend of Nawal Al-maghafi. Recently, I watched her documentary Yemen: Coronavirus in a warzone and as a mother myself, I was heartbroken to see the story of 8 year old Hassan at the end. The film inspired me to want to do something, and I know there are many others like me who watched the film and are desperate to help.

As a Yemeni myself, I can't believe how many children are suffering in a place I once called home. It is a man-made disaster and completely preventable.

I have been in touch with Nawal and Nurse Makiyah and discussed what we can do to support her with the incredible work that they do.

Nurse Makiya has said that aid cuts have had a major impact on the support she is able to give the children and their families once they leave her clinic. She used to be able to provide them with a food basket and clothing to sustain themselves, but now the aid she receives only covers the expenses incurred whilst the child is receiving treatment in the clinic. They also have to pay for fuel to reach the clinic in the first place, which means many desperate children never make it to her.

Yemen is facing a major humanitarian crisis. A devastating conflict has left children and families in urgent need of food, water and medical supplies. Currently, over 2 million children are starving.

No place in Yemen is safe for children.

Malnutrition clinics, like the one Nurse Makiyah works in, provide life-saving medical treatment for children suffering from severe malnutrition.  The children that visit her clinic come from the poorest areas in the country,  a few miles away from an active frontline.

We are raising money to provide food baskets for families who visit Nurse Makiyah's clinic, so they have support once their treatment is complete.

The basket will contain their basic necessities:

 - 25kg flour
- 10kg of rice
- 10kg of sugar
- 3kg dates
- 4L oil
and 2 outfits per child.

Each basket costs £35 ($45).

The money donated will be sent to a team in Yemen who will work with Nurse Makiya to purchase these supplies from local markets, supporting the local economy in Aslam, Yemen.

We will keep updating this page with how many baskets have been purchased.

80% of Yemen’s population are in need of humanitarian aid and protection. More than five years of fighting has already pushed Yemen and its health system to the brink of collapse. Millions of children lack access to clean water and sanitation facilities and are in desperate need of basic healthcare. Malnutrition is also at an all-time high. 2 million children are acutely malnourished and over 368,000 children under 5 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition and urgently need life-saving food to survive.
