Year Two with Ms. E
Donation protected
My gratitude: We had such amazing success last year thanks to all of our donors! People donated everything from money to food to art supplies! Your generosity created a loving environment for my first second grade classroom. Thank you for impacting the lives of these children and for supporting me through this journey.
My Info:
Name - Anke Ehlert (Ms. E)
Position - 2nd Grade Teacher
School - Academy of Warren
Location - Detroit, MI
My Story:
This is my SECOND year teaching. I am still in Detroit at Academy of Warren on 8 Mile. Many of my students will arrive to my classroom next week several grade levels behind their affluent peers. We have no time to waste. The school budget is meager and provides very few resources that are fundamental to creating a supportive, structured environment that facilitates learning to my students. My vision is to make their second grade classroom a second home — inviting, structured, and filled with the tools and learning instruments every child deserves.
Classroom Needs: The money these children need is for items to help cultivate this supportive classroom environment.
-basic tools: pencils (because they always get lost or broken), folders for each student (math/ela/homework), binders for tracking students work and progress, scissors and glue
-math tools: dry erase boards, dry erase markers, dry erasers (so each child can do math on their board and hold up the answer. These tools make math a fun activity rather than a chore)
-FOOD, FOOD, FOOD: My students lack food. I would like some of this money to go to healthy snacks for my children throughout the week as well as some breakfast foods for those students who do not eat breakfast at home.
-books: books for our classroom library, 5 Student Dictionaries so students learn how to research, a monthly subscription to Scholastic News so that students stay updated on current events and learn how to read critically
-miscellaneous: some extra money for little prizes like stickers or erasers when someone turns in all their homework for the week, for lesson plans or activities that I may buy via the internet,
My Pitch:
The small items have the potential to make such a difference in the lives and learning for my second grade children. These simple yet vital tools will allow me to create a classroom environment that will challenge and stimulate my students to become purposeful people who are on a never-ending quest to learn and question. With these essential resources and by setting high expectations for my students in this supportive classroom environment, my vision is to create children who believe in themselves, their abilities, and their future.
