Year of the Rabbit | Teaser
Hello! My name is Abigail Kemp. I am a KSU Media and Entertainment graduate, passionate storyteller, and Chinese adoptee who wants to explore her past.
Since I can remember, I have wanted to travel back to China and document the experience. In 1999, I was born and left outside of a school gate in a rural Hefei community, and in 2001, I was adopted from the Hefei Welfare Orphanage and taken to the United States. Growing up, I never felt like my family was not my family, and today, I feel blessed for my family and the opportunities I have been given in life. However, there has always been a lingering question regarding where I came from. Although I spent the first year of my life in China, I have yet to travel back to the place I once called home. While there are several amazing documentaries about Chinese adoptees and the One Child Policy, few have been created from the adoptee’s perspective by an adoptee.
Since I was born in the Year of the Rabbit and the Rabbit returns in 2023, I wish to travel back at the end of this year. I plan on traveling back to significant locations like the orphanage and the school and filming a documentary about the journey as well as comparing it to archival footage of my 2001 adoption.
Funds raised would go towards my trip back to China and the documentary I plan to create about this experience.
- To fully immerse me in the experience, I plan on bringing a videographer along and would need to cover their travel expenses as well as my own.
- Since I am not fluent in the language or familiar with the culture, funds raised would also help me hire a translator.
- Funds would also go towards the camera gear, sound gear, film editing, visas, and insurance.
Ultimately, along with the exploration of my past, I hope this documentary also resonates with other adoptees and families. In addition to GoFundMe, I am also applying for documentary grants to help fund this project. Once this project is complete, I will submit it to film festivals and share it with other Chinese adoptee communities!
Thank you for listening to my story. Donors' names, if they wish to be named, will be included in the end credits of the documentary for helping my lifelong dream come true! I appreciate any contribution amount you can provide at this time.
Sincerely,
