My unrelenting and vigorous father passed on the 7th of May after he fell victim to SARS-CoV-2, otherwise known as COVID-19. After presenting to the hospital with left leg pain, he was admitted, and days later, diagnosed with COVID-19. On the 6th night, the medical staff informed my family that he was starting to have trouble breathing. Hours later, he was gone. My father comes from a strong family lineage with no medical problems and ancestors living beyond their 90s; yet a simple visit to the hospital and he was diagnosed and fell victim to COVID-19.
When my father was 6, he fell off a tree and dislocated his left knee and ankle. My grandpa and grandma thought that my father would heal on his own and did not go to the hospital. As my father aged, his left knee started to grow diagonally and by the time he went to the hospital at age 10, they informed him that his left leg deformity is permanent and that nothing could be done. Often, my father would get cramps in that affected leg due to poor blood flow and contractures due to the muscles not being able to move.
Although my father has been living a nomadic lifestyle for the past 15 years, he was otherwise healthy and stable. This was the first time he was ever admitted to the hospital. I had rarely seen him during those years and will always regret not spending more time with him.
His passing has caused my mother excruciating pain. She has been flying back and forth from New York to Hong Kong to take care of my grandmother who has suffered from two strokes in the past year, only to come back to my father's passing.
As a son, I am furious that my otherwise healthy father most likely contracted COVID-19 from the hospital who did not have enough infection precautions in place.
As a nurse, I understand the lack of equipment.
My mother has been bullied by her healthcare workplace as the sole worker to transport COVID-19 patients to and from their home. Their goal is to get her to quit and they have won. I will not have my mother put herself into that hazardous and reckless situation.
I am wholeheartedly asking to please support us during this burdensome times. Please wear a mask to save another life.
